The National Transport Authority is to respond to falling revenues and reduced funding by increasing the cost of fares for bus, rail and Luas services.

Monthly and annual tickets will rise from November 1st while an increase in the prices of Leap card, cash and prepaid fares will be introduced from December 1st.

An NTA report stated that the operating environment for Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann had become "challenging" and has had a "detrimental impact" on their funding and revenues.

Dublin Bus

Adult cash fares for Dublin Bus journeys of between 1 and 3 stages will increase from €1.65 to €1.80. Longer journeys of 4 to 7 stages will rise from €2.15 to €2.35.

Fares for journeys of between 7 and 13 stages will rise by 20 cent from €2.60 to €2.80 while journeys of more than 13 stages will increase from €2.80 to €3.05.

The NTA pointed to the increased savings which could be made by availing of the Leap card service: journeys from stages 1-3 will now cost €1.45, from 7-4 will rise to €1.95, between 7-13 will cost €2.15 and journeys of over 13 stages will amount to €2.50.

Luas

On the Luas, the cost of an adult single peak-time ticket for the Red and Green lines will rise by 10 cent from €1.70 to €1.80. Fares for longer journeys will also increase by 10 cent.

Once again Leap card holders can hope to make savings; the price of adult single peak-time tickets for the Red and Green lines remain unchanged at €1.45.
