Dublin businesses object to homeless shelter near five-star hotel

The Dublin Simon Community say they are not sure why there is opposition to a proposed homeless shelter planned for Fitzwilliam Street Lower.

Businesses in the South Georgian Quarter of Dublin have objected to the opening of a new hostel for the homeless - just 400 metres from the Merrion Hotel.

According to the Sunday Times, more than 25 submissions have been made to Dublin City Council over a proposed homeless shelter on Fitzwilliam Street Lower beside the five-star hotel.

Number 9 and 10 Fitzwilliam Street Lower are owned by the city council and had been earmarked to accommodate a homeless shelter.

However, local objectors say they are concerned about putting an emergency shelter in buildings that are protected structures.

They also claim it may become a 'wet hostel', where alcohol can be consumed.

However, Sam McGuinness from the Dublin Simon Community say the current shelter on Harcourt Street is no longer fit for purpose and the move is necessary:
