The report of the Dublin City Centre Taskforce is due to be published next week.
Back in May, the Taoiseach Simon Harris asked the taskforce to produce a report, aimed at improving public safety and making the city a more desirable place to live, work and visit.
Headed up by former An Post CEO David McRedmond, the taskforce included a range of groups, including Gardaí, the National Transport Agency (NTA) and Dublin City Council.
It is understood the final report contains 10 major initiatives to revive the inner city.
They include significant recommendations for the revitalisation of O’Connell Street, with plans to revitalise the GPO as a major public building.
Some of the proposals for the building considered by the taskforce include a new headquarters for RTÉ, a new world-class museum or a leading Government department.
The Taskforce did not recommend a decision on the building.
The report also makes recommendations regarding housing, policing, waste and culture.
It recommends a ‘step change’ in how the inner city is developed – and calls for the regeneration of the area to be managed as a special programme.
The Government is now expected to establish an interdepartmental group tasked with reporting back to Government with recommendations before the end of the year.
The group will be overseen by the Department of Taoiseach.
The group will also be responsible for assessing the cost and policy implications of the plan each year.
The report will be published next week.
