The €80 clamping fee currently in place should be increased to €130 to deter illegal parking.
That is according to the parking appeals office for Dublin City Council, Bill Kielty.
Mr Kielty says there has not been an increase in the fee since 1998, and that the penalty is no longer preventing illegal parking.
The clamping service is currently costing €7m to run, with just €4.2m brought in in fees.
But the Dublin Lord Mayor Christy Burke said he finds the idea of increasing the fee as "insulting" and "totally unacceptable".
He told Newstalk Breakfast people have enough charges to be paying as it stands.
