Dublin Fire Brigade have issued renewed warnings about the danger of fireworks and fire safety in general ahead of New Year’s Eve.

Health experts are warning people can lose fingers and limbs when handling dangerous fireworks and bangers.

The chance of a fire breaking out in your home increases at Christmas time, according to Direct Line insurance.

On Christmas Day, for example, there is a 12% increased risk of fire.

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management is reminding all homeowners to make sure they have a working smoke alarm on New Year’s Eve.

Fire extinguishers on New Year's Eve

Dublin Fire Brigade Spokesperson Mark Doyle said a fire extinguisher in the house on New Year's Eve can be lifesaving.

“If you're stuck and don't have a fire blanket, maybe you have a large wet towel to place over a pot or pan on fire,” he said.

“But generally, a fire extinguisher is good to have around the home.

“A really good one to have is a powder fire extinguisher – the CO2 would be or electrical items, water is good for soft small things like paper fires, but powder covers all bases.”

The Northern Irish Fire and Rescue Service has also warned people to remember to blow out candles and not cook under the influence of alcohol.

It also warned people to unplug sockets and stub cigarettes out properly and dispose of them carefully.

Firework risks

Dublin Fire Brigade saw a “very noticeable” increase in fireworks last Halloween, with an emergency call made to the service every 70 seconds.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Greg O’Dwyer said the fire service received 244 fire calls, and 385 emergency medical calls, in 24 hours across Halloween.

Of the 244 calls, 190 of them were bonfire-related.

He said fireworks are being given to children by their parents and warned people against that this New Year’s Eve.

Last year, Dublin Fire Brigade saw a "surge in numbers" of firefighter paramedics affected by COVID-19 between Christmas and New Year's Eve
