Thousands are getting ready to take part in the Dublin marathon tomorrow, with road closures affecting traffic and public transport across the city.

More than 22-thousand people will be running, jogging and walking the 26-point-2 mile course, which starts on Lesson Street Lower.

Thousands are also travelling to Dublin from 50 countries to take part in tomorrow's event.

Road closures are already in place in parts of the city, with warnings some public transport routes will be impacted.

The Route

Merrion Square South will remain closed until 2pm on Monday, while all other roads are scheduled to reopen by 8pm on Sunday.

Starting on Leeson Street Lower, the marathon will move through St Stephen’s Green South up to Kevin Street Upper.

From there, it will head straight along Patrick’s Street, passing onto Nicholas Street, Christchurch Place, Lord Edward Street and Parliament Street.

There the route turns onto the quays, continuing on until the James Joyce bridge, at which point it will move along Blackhall place through Stoneybatter.

Runners will then be directed along Manor Street, Aughrim Street and the North Circular Road to the gates of the Phoenix Park.

After passing through the centre of the park, participants will continue along the Castleknock road.

This marks the farthest point at which the marathon extends into North Dublin.

The route then turns West on College Road, continuing along Tower Road until re-entering the Phoenix Park at Knockmaroon Road.

Runners exit the park again at the Chapelizod Gate and continue over Chapelizod bridge, after which they will turn onto St Laurence Road.

Continuing straight along the Sarsfield, Inchicore and South Circular Roads, the path will pivot around Dolphin’s barn, moving south-west along the Crumlin, Drimnagh and Walkinstown Roads.

Here, the route will turn East, moving participants down the Cromwellsfort and Kimmage Roads.

It will then diverge South into Bushy Park along Fortfield and Templeogue Roads.

Runners will continue onto Terenure Road East, Orwell Road and Park, up Milltown Road, and down South again along Clonskeagh Road.

The Final Stretch

Participants will follow Roebuck Road and Fosters Avenue around the back and East side of the UCD campus, continuing over the flyover bridge by way of Stillorgan Road.

A turn onto Nutley Lane will bring participants past Elm Park Golf Course, before returning North onto Merrion Road.

The Northumberland Road will bring the race back into the city centre, with the final stretch taking place along Warrington Place, Mount Street and Mount Street Upper, where the marathon finishes.
