Lord Mayor of Dublin James Geoghegan has backed calls to erect a statue of Sinéad O’Connor in the city.

The Fine Gael councillor said Dublin City Council requires someone to be dead for 20 years before a statue or memorial is made for them.

“If ever there was someone the rules should be broken for, Sinéad O’Connor is that person,” he said.

“It would be nice to turn what was a negative controversy about her wax sculpture into something positive that could involve Sinéad’s family and pay tribute to her legacy.”

He told The Irish Mirror he would be “delighted” to lend support to a campaign for a statue to be made soon.

The Mayor the council’s current minimum time is “too inflexible”.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said the decision to erect a statue is up to the Commemorations Committee, which will be appointed in September.

There have been calls to introduce a statue of the late singer since a wax figure of her was unveiled at the National Wax Museum last Thursday.

The wax figure was met with immediate disappointment – and it was subsequently removed by the museum which also apologised.

The museum said the figure “did not meet our high standards or the expectations of Sinéad’s devoted fans".

It said museum director Paddy Dunning held a meeting with staff on Friday where it was decided that the museum ‘can do better’.

The museum thanked everyone who provided their feedback on the statue adding, “We assure you that your voices are heard”.

“We look forward to unveiling a new figure that truly honours Sinead O'Connor and her extraordinary impact,” it said.

Remembering Sinéad O'Connor

O’Connor was found dead in her London home on July 26th, 2023.

It was later revealed that she died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma.

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer was nominated for a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in February.

The inductees were announced in April - Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Chairman John Sykes said the nominees “reflect the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honours and celebrates”.
