The victim of the stabbing on Dublin’s South Anne Street has been named as Quam Babatunde.

Gardaí found Mr Babatunde with knife injuries on Saturday morning and he was then taken to hospital where he later died.

A second man was treated at St James’ Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

On Newstalk Breakfast, Irish Times journalist Kitty Holland said more details about the victim have emerged.

“What we know is the victim of the fatal attack is a 34-year-old asylum seeker called Quam Babatunde,” she said.

“He was originally from Nigeria and we know that he was found unresponsive by Gardaí in the South Anne Street area, just off Grafton Street.

“It seems he had attended a concert in a club there and the working theory is that a fight had broken out and had spilled out onto the street.

“It sounds like a really terrifying scene in the early hours of Saturday morning.”

Mr Babatunde had been living in Ballyogan accommodation centre in south Dublin while his application for international protection was being processed.

“It’s easily accessible into town on the Luas,” Ms Hollland said.

“There’s a Luas just outside, he presumably got the Luas into town to go to this concert of a swing band.

“By all accounts, he was really looking forward to it [but] it ended very tragically for him.”

In the aftermath of the attack, Tánaiste Simon Harris described it as “"alarming, shocking and deeply concerning".

He also said the Government had been briefed on the details of the case by the Garda Commissioner.

“So far, we don’t know of any arrests,” Ms Holland said.

“Speaking yesterday, the Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said that they’ve made really excellent progress.

“They’re really implying that… they’ve as good as identified who the perpetrator is.”

Ms Holland added that business owners in the area are “very shocked”.

“People are saying… that there should have been a Garda patrol in the area,” she said.

“The Guards will argue back that… they can’t be on every street, at every time of the day.”

Anyone who witnessed the attack has been asked to contact Pearse Street Garda Station.
