A 45-year-old woman has told the High Court how her childhood was shattered after suffering 10 years of harrowing abuse at the hands of a neighbour while growing up in north Dublin.
Sinead McCarthy-Garofalo of Palmerstown Wood is suing her attacker, Bernard Delaney, who was described in court as a pied-piper figure who played guitar for local children whose parents were delighted he was looking after them.
She grew up in Fairview where she was abused from the age of 4 by neighbourhood accountant Bernard Delaney - a man described in court as a sexual predator.
She said he initially appeared charming and fun, but the court heard the abuse she subsequently suffered was of a most violent nature.
The 45-year-old has suffered from anorexia and has made attempts on her life.
She told the court she feels worthless and she worries about the effect on her two daughters.
She is now suing her abuser for the anguish and illness she has suffered. The court has heard he is currently in prison and while he is not contesting the case, he has transferred all his assets to his wife.
Mr. Justice George Bermingham will award damages tomorrow morning.
