Dublin’s Camden Street has been named one of the coolest streets in the world by Time Out.

The magazine describes the street as part of a “sprawling neighbourhood that’s retained a no-frills, post-modern grit”, adding it has also become a “hotspot for creative spaces”.

It also praised its “unpretentious pubs, political street art and a buzzy dining scene”.

The magazine urges anyone who finds themselves on Camden Street to try the cinnamon buns at Meet Me In The Morning coffee shop, ask for a cheeseburger and shoestring fries from Bunsen or try a thali from “Dublin’s best Indian”, Pickle.

For those looking for something to drink, they recommend a Guinness at the Bleeding Horse or a whiskey at Devitt’s.

The authors also praise the comedy on offer at Anseo, the live music at Cassidy’s and the classes at Yogahub.

The article also notes that the street is mentioned in James Joyce’s Ulysses – and even back then was noted as a trendy place to hang out.

“Bloom and the wife were there. Lashings of stuff we put up: port wine and sherry and curacao to which we did ample justice. Fast and furious it was. After liquids came solids. Cold joints galore and mince pies,” Joyce wrote.

Criteria

Time Out said it compiled the list to give readers a chance to visit places outside the main tourist hot spots in order to give visitors “a glimpse of a city’s true character”.

Melbourne’s High Street took home the top spot, with Time Out praising its “unique, something-for-everyone local businesses”.

Hollywood Road in Hong Kong took the silver medal and East Eleventh Avenue in Austin took the bronze.

Other streets that made the 30-strong list include London’s Gerrard Street, the Rue de Belleville in Paris and New York’s Fifth Avenue, Park Slope.

Camden Street came in 22nd on the list.
