Dublin’s iconic Poolbeg Chimneys are set to get a summer makeover.
The landmark is to be repainted in its classic red and white stripes – with work on the top half of the chimneys due to get underway next month.
Work will then begin on the bottom half next spring once the weather improves after winter.
The ESB has been carrying out a maintenance programme at the Poolbeg site over the last number of years – with caps placed on the chimneys to minimise water ingress.
A full condition survey of the structures will be completed before the repainting job gets underway.
ESB spokesman Jim Dollard said the chimneys have not been in use for over 15 years – but they remain “one of the most recognisable structures in Dublin”.
“The Poolbeg peninsula where the chimneys are located is now home to our Poolbeg Energy Hub,” he said.
“Alongside the existing gas-fired turbine on the site, innovative technologies are being deployed onsite to support our delivery of renewable energy, including batteries and, in future, green hydrogen and offshore wind.”
The first phase of the painting job will see the top 100 metres of both chimneys repainted red and white.
