The North Quays in Dublin could be reduced to one lane for cars in a radical new traffic plan. Proposals being put forward would see a new two-way bike lane replace one of the motor vehicle lanes.
The head of the City Council is aiming to increase the number of bike journeys by 4% by the year 2020.
Owen Keegan - who is nick-named the 'Traffic Czar' - says a dedicated cycle lane will encourage more people to ditch the car in favour of two wheels.
Speaking to the Irish Times, he said the move is in a bid to increase bike journeys to 10% in the next six years.
The proposal sees a two-way cycle lane introduced on the North Quays, meaning drivers would be restricted to using just one lane.
Details are still being drawn up and a formal plan is to be brought before the Council in the coming weeks.
Newstalk's George Hook went head-to-head with David McWilliams on The Pat Kenny Show over the plan.
Dr. Mike McKillen is chairman of cyclist.ie and he is fully behind the plan.
