The Special Criminal Court will hand down a verdict next Tuesday in John Dundon's trial for the murder of 28-year-old Shane Geoghegan.

The Garryowen rugby player was shot in the head and body as he walked home at around 1am in the Clonmore Estate, Kilteragh in Dooradoyle on November 9th 2008.

The court has heard evidence his neighbour John McNamara - aka Pitchfork - was the intended target of the gun attack. 31-year-old John Dundon of Hyde Road denies the murder.

This afternoon the non-jury court heard closing submissions from both sides.

Sean Guerin BL, for the prosecution, said the evidence against Dundon is ‘clear, convincing, compelling and irresistible’. He said the main witness April Collins had given a convincing account of the central role the accused man played in ordering and planning the killing of Mr. McNamara.

He added that it was John Dundon’s casualness in failing to ensure that his target was actually killed that led to the tragic death of Shane Geoghegan.

The court was told that April Collins did not come forward at the time because she was in fear of John Dundon but that ‘she eventually told the truth’.

Brendan Nix SC, for the defence, asked the non-jury court to consider whether April Collins may have struck a deal with gardai while facing a criminal charge for making a threat.

He said there was evidence ‘she had a dread of going to jail’ and that her statement about Shane Geoghegan’s death was made 2 months before she received a suspended sentence.

Mr. Nix added that April Collins was dressed to go out on the night Shane Geoghegan ‘was so brutally done down’.

‘She is guilty of knowing a person had committed an arrestable offence and she did nothing about it’ he said. ‘Will she be charged? No she will not’, he added.
