Westmeath Gardaí have seized cocaine and arrested two people following a planned search.

At around 7.00am on Thursday, the search was conducted at a house in Kilnamanagh, Clonown, Athlone by officers from the Crime and Drugs.

They were assisted by the Regional Armed Support Unit.

During the search, cocaine with an estimated street value of up to €700,000 was seized.

A man and a woman, both aged in their 20s, were arrested.

They are being held under Section 2 of The Criminal Justice Act at Athlone Garda Station.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.
