The Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe is denying that the Garda Commissioner wrote to him and directed him to co-operate with the garda investigation into the cancellation of penalty points.
In a statement issued last night, Sergeant McCabe said media reports about Martin Callinan's directions to him are "gravely misleading and false".
Meanwhile the Cabinet may today sign off on an independent inquiry into claims of alleged garda corruption in investigating serious crimes.
Justice Minister Alan Shatter - who's faced calls to resign over the issue - will brief the Cabinet on what he knew and when this morning.

The HSE, paramedics and Siptu representatives will face questions today from Oireachtas members concerning ambulance response times.
All parties will appear before the health committee as part of a review ordered by the Health Minister James Reilly after it emerged that crucial response targets were being missed.
Siptu has welcomed the review by the HSE and the Health Information and Quality Authority and has also asked that they take into consideration the level of resources available to the ambulance service.
