An earthquake with magnitude of 7.0 has struck islands off north Japan. However there was no tsunami warning issued.

Buildings in Tokyo also shook from the quake.

The epicentre of the quake was about 275 kilometres north-east of Kuril'sk in the Kuril Islands, the US Geological Survey (USGS) says. A 5.7 magnitude aftershock was also reported.
