Courts in Egypt have been suspended in a protest at President Mohamed Mursi's decision to assume extensive new powers.

The decision to strike was taken at an emergency meeting of the judges union.

They are calling on the Egyptian President to cancel his declaration and reappoint the prosecutor general who was sacked on Thursday.

Yesterday, riot police fired tear gas in Cairo to try to disperse protestors - who were joined by some members of the judiciary.
