A man in his early 80s has died in a road crash in Co. Tipperary.

The incident happened on the M8 near Cahir, in ths southbound lane of the motorway, at around 2am this morning.

The man died when the car he was driving hit a truck.

He was taken to South Tipperary Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The stretch of road is closed this morning and gardaí at Cahir are appealing for witnesses.
