Elderly renters have poorer health outcomes than homeowners, research by the ERSI has found.

Half of all those in the supported rental sector over the age of 65 reported ill-health, compared to one third of homeowners.

The report also found there had been a steep decline in the number of supported renters with medical cards; in 2015, 87% had medical cards but by 2021 that figure had dropped to 74%.

The report also noted that one quarter of renters in the private sector with a chronic illness did not have a medical card.

Co-author Harry Humes said the figures highlighted a concerning trend.

“The lack of medical card coverage for individuals with chronic conditions and housing insecurity exacerbates their risk of poverty,” he said.

“The combined financial burden of increasing rents and healthcare costs could pose significant vulnerability.

“A medical card eligibility system that better incorporates healthcare needs rather than solely income could provide greater protection for these vulnerable groups.”

Brendan Walsh, who also co-authored the research, said it was time to examine the eligibility for medical cards.

Census figures have revealed the rate of home ownership in Ireland declined from 67.6% in 2016 to 65.9% in 2022.
