An elderly woman in Ballyfermot, Dublin was assaulted during an aggravated burglary in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí said the woman was attacked at around 2am when a man entered her home at Ballyfermot Parade and threatened her with a hammer.

After a struggle the woman, who is in her 60s, managed to free herself and look for help.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at a Garda station in West Dublin.
