An elderly woman has died after she was struck by a van in County Carlow.

Gardaí say it happened in an enclosed private car park at Presentation Place, College Street in Carlow Town at around 4.30pm yesterday.

The woman, aged in her 80s, was taken to St. Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious injuries where she has since been pronounced dead.

The van driver was uninjured.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to pedestrians who were on Presentation Place between 4.15pm and 4.45pm.

They are also urging road users who were in the area at the time to come forward.

A technical examination of the scene has already been carried out and a postmortem will be arranged.
