An elderly woman has died in a car crash in County Meath.

Gardaí say it happened on the R148 near Enfield shortly after 2pm yesterday.

The driver of one of the cars, a woman in her 80s, died from her injuries.

The driver of the second car was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí have carried out a forensic examination of the scene and the road has since reopened.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to road users who were travelling in the area at the time and may have camera footage.

The local coroner has been notified and a postmortem will be carried out

In all five people died on Irish roads yesterday.

A man in his 40s was knocked down and killed by a stolen car in a hit and run in North County Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A young man was killed in a motorbike crash in Finglas, north Dublin shortly after 2pm.

Two elderly people died in car crash near Kilmacrennan, County Donegal at around 11.50pm yesterday evening.
