An elderly woman was seriously injured in a car crash in Virginia, County Cavan, this afternoon.
At 1.10pm, Gardaí and emergency services were called out to the scene of a two car crash in Lisgrey.
An air ambulance also flew out to take the passenger of one car, a woman in her 70s, to the Mater Hospital in Dublin. She remains in a critical condition.
The driver of the second car was also taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The road will remain shut overnight ahead of an inspection by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Gardaí have asked for any witnesses to contact them and are particularly keen to talk to anyone who was travelling on the N3 between The Lavey Inn and Virginia between 12.45pm and 1.15pm.
