An independent information campaign is being launched today for the two referendums taking place on March 8th.

The Electoral Commission, An Coimisiún Toghcháin, will explain the issues being voted on and promote people's participation.

The referendums deal with constitutional references to family and the role of women in the home.

The first would amend Article 41 to "provide for a wider concept of Family" in the Constitution.

The second would delete Article 41.2 to remove the reference to the role of women in the home and insert a new Article 42B to recognise family care.

The Commission, headed by Supreme Court Judge Ms Justice Marie Baker, is also organising information campaign visits around the country.

Events are planned in Kildare, Tullamore, Sligo and Galway today and tomorrow.

It is the Electoral Commission's first referendum information campaign since it took over the role from the Referendum Commission last year.

Among its functions is to provide "independent, impartial information about the proposals being put to the people, and to encourage people to vote."

It is also reminding people to ensure they are on the electoral register on checktheregister.ie, and to apply for a postal vote if required.

Applications for a special or postal voting arrangement must be received by local authorities no later than February 12th.

Applications to register or change details must be received no later than February 20th.

To be eligible to vote, you must have reached the age of 18 on polling day, be an Irish citizen and be living in the State.
