Over 130 new high-powered electric vehicle recharging points are to be installed around Ireland.

The new chargers will be based at 17 recharging pools along the country’s major roads.

They are to be installed by private businesses with the support of Department of Transport grants.

The Department has said the average distance between recharging pools will be 45km and they are due to be in place by the end of next year.

It said each pool will include both ‘Fast’ and ‘Ultra Fast’ charging points so people can recharge their cars quickly and easily.

The rollout is the first part of a major plan to provide adequate EV charging in Ireland, with a second phase concentrating on smaller national roads to open later this year.

“EVs are an important part of our journey to reducing emissions in the transport sector,” said Transport Minister Eamon Ryan.

“They are cleaner, better cars – but we want to provide extra certainty to people either using an EV now or thinking about one into the future.

“Putting in place these banks of high-powered recharging points is an important first step in our commitment to people and to a more sustainable transport system.”

Minister Ryan said his department aims to introduce “many other schemes” aimed at easing people’s EV range anxiety.

“This will complement our other commitments such as the EV purchase grant scheme, which will remain unchanged again next year, our grants for home chargers and the continued VRT reduction for EVs,” he said.

“Add this to the greater choice and price competitiveness on the market, we hope more and more people will be encouraged to choose electric.”

In all, the new charging points will add over 24 megawatts of charging capacity to Ireland’s road network.

Here’s where all of the new charging points will be located:
