An emergency meeting is being held in Belfast this afternoon in an effort to try and end the violence over the union flag controversy.

Last night, Police came under attack from loyalists in East Belfast on a third consecutive night of rioting.

A crowd of over 100 threw bricks and fireworks at officers - as police responded with plastic bullets and water cannons.

One man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder - after shots were fired at police.

The ongoing unrest was sparked by a decision last month to introduce restrictions on flying the Union Flag at Belfast City Hall.

Ulster Unionist Alderman Jim Rodgers, a former mayor of Belfast, says the protests must be suspended.

Yesterday, the Loyalist activist William Frazer said he is organising a demonstration in Dublin next weekend as part of the ongoing protests over the union flag controversy.

The last time unionists held a protest in Dublin - the Love Ulster Parade - violence broke out and hundreds of people were injured.

However, spokesperson for the Ulster People's Forum William Frazer says they want this protest to be peaceful.
