The European Ombudsman says 'integration' is the key to accommodating foreign migrants in Ireland.

Emily O'Reilly claims the majority of people who come here are welcomed into the community, but she is warning against housing refugees in ghettos.

Ireland has recently agreed to take an extra 600 migrants as the crisis in the Mediterranean continues, but the standard of direct provision centres, used to house asylum-seekers, has been severely criticised.

Speaking on The Colette Fitzpatrick Show this morning, Ms O'Reilly says it is important people coming here are not excluded from the community.

"I think a lot of people who do come here are genuinely welcomed into the community," she told Colette. "A lot of the children in particular integrate very well. We have to be very careful about not putting people into ghettos.

"I think integration is very important for a healthy society and for the sake of the migrants themselves," she added.

You can listen back to her comments below, where she started by discussing the EU response to the crisis in the Mediterranean:

The Chairman of Trócaire Ireland yesterday said that we have an obligation to safeguard the rights of migrants fleeing persecution by crossing the Mediterranean.

The Bishop of Cloyne, William Crean, welcomed the humanitarian response of the Irish Naval Service.

But he also said that not enough is being done to punish the criminals who are trafficking thousands of these vulnerable refugees.
