EMMY will represent Ireland at the semi final at the Eurovision Song Contest in Switzerland.

The Norwegian-born singer beat off competition from five other acts on the Late Late Show last night, winning a combined public vote along with those of a national and international jury.

EMMY will represent the country at the semi finals in Basel, Switzerland on the 13th and 15th of May.

Newstalk reporter Henry McKean told The Anton Savage Show that EMMY's song is about Laika, a Soviet dog that died in space.

"I feel quite emotional even hearing the song because we know the dog died, we know the dog had a life up there in space - it's just beautiful," he said.

Henry said the song gives Ireland "a real chance" at winning the competition this year.

"We had 300 songs entering into this and we narrowed it down to six, and this particular song is going to semi-finals on Thursday the 15th - hopefully the final on My 17th," he said.

"Hopefully we can beat Sweden because we're joint seventh on winning the Eurovision and we haven't won it in ages."

According to Henry, it is not unusual for countries to send non-nationals to represent them for the competition.

"Céline Dion, in 1988, she represented Switzerland, she is Canadian," he said.

"Norway actually sent an Irish person, Fionnuala Sherry, back in 1995 with [the song] Nocturne.

"So, it does happen that, you know, countries send someone who wasn't from their country to represent them.

"And I know some people are going, 'What about all those brilliant Irish acts? What about all those fantastic Irish people and we're sending a Norwegian?'

"And do you know what I say to that? 'Isn't it fantastic'."

Henry said a large reason we haven't won Eurovision in so many years is that we don't spend as much money on the competition as larger countries.
