COVID-19: 36 further deaths from the coronavirus in Ireland

There have been 36 more coronavirus deaths in Ireland, new figures show.

A further 345 new cases were also confirmed here on Tuesday.

The latest figures bring the death toll here to 210, while the number of confirmed cases stands at 5,709.

Infectious disease specialist Prof Sam McConkey says “two weeks of even more extreme” coronavirus measures could shorten the "economic closedown" the country is currently experiencing.

He told The Hard Shoulder we need another week or more of data from Ireland to see if recent decreases in the number of daily cases can be sustained.

However, he also said that we perhaps need to see more restrictions for a short period of time to ensure Ireland can get back to normal quickly.

WhatsApp to limit number of times a message can be forwarded

The messaging service WhatsApp says it is limiting the number of times a message can be forwarded on the platform.

The app already lets users know if a message has been forwarded many times, using double arrows to indicate it did not originate from a close contact.

It is now limiting people’s ability to share messages that are seen as 'highly forwarded' from five to just one chat at a time.

This applies to both individual and group chats.

UK PM Boris Johnson 'breathing without a ventilator' in intensive care

British officials say UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is breathing without a ventilator and has not been diagnosed with pneumonia.

It comes after he was transferred to intensive care due to persistent coronavirus symptoms on Monday.

His spokesman said Mr Johnson was "stable overnight" and remains in "good spirits".

PSNI says 'paramilitary groupings' issuing threats during COVID-19 crisis

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has said a number of so-called paramilitary groupings have issued threats during the coronavirus crisis.

The head of the force's Paramilitary Crime Task Force has warned those seeking to exploit communities to stop, or risk facing the consequences of their actions.
