Atmospheric carbon dioxide hits highest level since records began
The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is at its highest level in human history and has just seen its second highest year-on-year rise since records began.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the average amount of carbon dioxide it recorded in the atmosphere at its Hawaii observatory last month peaked at 414.7 parts per million (PPM).
This is the highest seasonal peak it has recorded since it began monitoring the atmosphere 61 years ago.
It also marks the seventh year in a row that the observatory on top of Hawaii’s largest volcano has recorded a steep rise in carbon dioxide concentration.

Counting has finished for the day at Nemo Rangers GAA club in County Cork.
A full recount of votes got underway at the centre this morning after the first round ended with only 326 votes separating Ms Ní Riada and the Green Party's Grace O'Sullivan.
They were competing for the fifth seat in the constituency – which will only come into play if and when the UK leaves the EU.

Two teenage boys deny murdering the 14-year-old schoolgirl in Dublin last year while one of them is further charged with aggravated sexual assault.
The jury first heard from the prosecuting barrister Brendan Grehan five weeks ago.
In his opening address, he told the eight men and four women that the case against Boy A relies on alleged lies about where he last saw Ana Kriegel and what he described as a “compelling and coercive” forensic case.
