Coronavirus: 10 more deaths and 159 new cases in Republic

There have been 10 more coronavirus-related deaths in the Republic.

It means a total of 1,497 people have now died here since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Meanwhile, 159 new cases have also been confirmed - bringing the total number of cases in the country to 23,401.

The Government's planned childcare scheme for frontline healthcare workers has been cancelled.

It was due to start next Monday and would have seen childcare professionals provide the service in family homes.

In a statement, Children's Minister Katherine Zappone says it is now been cancelled due to the poor uptake by providers - with only six signing up.

Varadkar: Reopening schools and créches 'could be among safest things we do' over next few months

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says reopening schools and crechés could be one of the safest things the Government does as it eases COVID-19 restrictions over the next few months.

His comments come after HIQA said it appears children aren't substantially contributing to the spread of coronavirus in their house or school.

The health watchdog has said the evidence on the subject is currently limited, but has pointed to international studies indicating that the transmission of the disease is lower among young people, particularly those under 14.

Gemma O’Doherty and John Waters have been refused permission to challenge the emergency legislation that introduced the COVID-19 restrictions.

They wanted the High Court to allow them bring a judicial review, as part of an attempt to have the laws quashed.

EU: Vouchers in lieu of cash for cancelled flights 'voluntary'

The European Commission has said that any vouchers offered to consumers in lieu of cash for cancelled flights should be voluntary and transferable.

The advice is part of a plan to help revive travel and tourism across the bloc.

It says member states should gradually lift travel restrictions and allow tourism businesses to re-open, while respecting necessary health precautions.
