Coronavirus restrictions extended until May 18th

Most of the current coronavirus restrictions are being extended for another two weeks, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed.

There have been some changes to the current restrictions for now - with older people who have cocooning being able to leave their homes for exercise from next week 'if they avoid all contact with other people'.

Meanwhile, the distance from home in which people can exercise is to be increased from 2 to 5 kilometres from next Tuesday.

Pubs, gyms, cinemas and theatres could be allowed reopen in August, under a roadmap for the easing of coronavirus restrictions announced by the Government this evening.

The roadmap - which has now been published online - details five 'phases' of easing of restrictions, with three weeks between each phase to allow officials to review the changes.

It's designed as a "menu of possible options" for health officials when deciding the next steps.

Officials have stressed that the plans and phases could change if there's any further increase or spike in coronavirus cases.

Coronavirus: 34 more deaths and 221 new cases in Republic

There have been a further 34 coronavirus-related deaths in the Republic.

It brings the total number of deaths in the country to 1,265, with one previously reported death having been denotified.

There have also been another 221 new cases of the virus confirmed this evening - bringing the total to 20,833.

Up to 900 jobs are to be cut at Aer Lingus.

It comes just hours after Ryanair announced plans to cut up to 3,000 jobs, as the industry struggles to cope with the impact of COVID-19 and the widespread grounding of flights.

Aer Lingus met with unions this morning to tell them it needs to reduce its head count by up to 20% due to the collapse in demand for air travel.

Gardaí confirm third death at Tullamore homeless hostel

A young man who was in a critical condition after becoming unresponsive at a Tullamore homeless hostel earlier in the week has died.

Two women died at the hostel on Sunday and Monday.

The 23-year-old man had been receiving medical attention at the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore since Monday.
