Members of the public “very narrowly avoided being shot” in Drogheda

A man injured in a shooting attack in Drogheda is in a “serious but stable” condition in hospital.

The attack happened just after 4:20pm this afternoon in the Hardmans Gardens area of the city.

Gardaí said a number of other people “very narrowly avoided being shot and seriously injured” in an attack they described as a “callous and reckless.”

The 36-year-old victim was shot a number of times in the leg and shoulder.

Superquinn founder and former Senator Feargal Quinn dies

President Michael D Higgins is leading tributes to the founder of the Superquinn supermarket chain, Feargal Quinn, who has died at the age of 82.

He passed away peacefully at his home in Howth after a short illness.

He is survived by his wife Denise, their five children - Eamonn, Stephen, Gillian, Donal and Zoe - as well as 19 grandchildren.

Mr Quinn was also a former member of the Seanad, having served on the National University of Ireland panel for 23 years.

Weather alerts as storm Hannah heads for Ireland

A number of weather warnings have been issued, as a storm is set to come on to Irish shores from Friday night.

'Storm Hannah' has been named by Met Éireann and will bring severe gales.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange wind warning for Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

Meanwhile a Status Yellow wind warning has also been issued for Connacht, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly, Donegal, Tipperary and Waterford.

Government issues Sri Lanka travel warning following Easter attack

The death toll from the Easter Sunday terror attacks in Sri Lanka has been reduced by more than 100.

The country’s health ministry said it now believes “about 253” people died in Sunday’s blasts.

The ministry said the change was the result of a calculation error.

Nine suicide bombers are believed to have carried out the attacks on churches and hotels in the Colombo area and the eastern city of Batticalo.

Antarctic emperor penguin colony suffers “catastrophic” breeding failure

One of the world’s largest emperor penguin colonies has suffered a “catastrophic” breeding failure.

Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey said the colony at Halley Bay in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea has failed to raise chicks for the last three years.

The colony used to be the second largest in the worlds – with between 14,000 – 25,000 breeding couples arriving every year.

The colony accounted for around 5% - 9% of the global emperor population.
