Man charged with murder of boxer Kevin Sheehy

A man has been charged with the murder of boxer Kevin Sheehy in Limerick yesterday.

The 20-year-old Olympic hopeful died after he was hit by an SUV on Hyde Road in Limerick city at 4:40am on Monday morning.

Gardaí said the driver of the car failed to remain at the scene.

A postmortem has been carried out; however, the results have not been released for operational reasons.

RTB handed new powers to police rent legislation

The Minister for Housing believes the Residential Tenancies Board now has the means and the power to enforce his newly expanded rent control legislation.

Eoghan Murphy was speaking after the Government's Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) legislation was officially expanded to 19 new areas across 11 counties.

It is illegal for landlords to increase rents by more than 4% per year within the zones.

The zones were originally increased in Dublin and Cork in 2016 and have since been expanded into a number of other areas.

Ulster Bank to sell off thousands of family home loans

Thousands of Irish homeowners are set to be affected after Ulster Bank announced its decision to sell off a mortgage portfolio worth around €900m.

The bank said 90% of the loans included in the sale relate to private and family homes.

It means around 3,200 Irish homeowners - holding mortgages worth €810m - are facing the prospect of having their loans sold to a separate fund.

Around 400 of the loans are buy-to-let mortgages.

German Defence Minister nominated as next European Commission President

EU leaders have nominated the German Defence Minister Ursula Von Der Leyen to be the next European Commission President.

After days of negotiations, leaders also elected the Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel as the President of the European Council, succeeding Donald Tusk.

The European Parliament must now vote on whether to accept Ms Von Der Leyen as the next commission president.

She will need to the approval of an absolute majority of the Parliament’s 751 members to take the position.

EPA to investigate Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is investigating "a brown coloured plume" at the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant in south Dublin.

Irish Water informed the EPA on Tuesday about the discharge that was seen coming from the plant.

However the water utility reported no unusual occurrence or breakdown at the facility over the last 48 hours.

The EPA says it is investigating the cause of the plume.
