Teenage boys sentenced for murder of Ana Kriegel

Boy A has been handed a life sentence for the murder of Ana Kriegel, but the judge has ordered for a review to take place after 12 years.

Boy B was sentenced to 15 years detention for his role in her murder, but his sentence will be reviewed in eight years.

Mr Justice Paul McDermott said the life of a deceased person can sometimes be deflected by the evidence during the course of a trial - but he began the delivery of his lengthy judgement by reminding the court that Ana Kriegel's life was of supreme importance, and central to this hearing.

He told the boys they must bear responsibility for her murder and must accept the consequences.

Global scientists warn of “untold suffering” from climate crisis

More than 11,000 scientists from right around the world have come together to warn that we face “untold suffering” if there is not an “immense increase” in efforts to combat the climate crisis.

Published 40 years to the since the first World Climate Conference, the statement warns that “the climate crisis has arrived and is accelerating faster than most scientists expected.”

“We declare clearly and unequivocally that planet Earth is facing a climate emergency,” it reads.

The scientists warn that, despite 40 years of climate negotiations and “explicit warnings of insufficient progress,” the world has generally “conducted business as usual and has largely failed to address this predicament.”

Man shot dead outside his home in Meath

Gardaí have confirmed that the victim of last night’s shooting in County Meath had been targeted before.

39-year-old Richie Carberry died in hospital after he was shot a number of times outside his home in the Castlemartin Estate in Bettystown at around 11.40pm.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he passed away shortly before 1am this morning.

His wife and children were at home during the attack.

Call for all-island agency to tackle ‘war-lords’ in border region

The Fianna Fáil leader has called for a new all-island agency to tackle criminal ‘war-lords’ in the border region.

It comes as the directors of Quinn Industrial Holdings met with the Garda Commissioner about the campaign of intimidation carried out against them.

The executives are demanding assurances that real action is being taken following the death threats they all received and the abduction and assault of Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lunney.

In the Dáil this afternoon, the Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin warned that “the rule of law is gone in the border area.”

Hospitals “overwhelmed” as trolley figures hit 2019 high

New figures show 679 people are waiting on trolleys at hospitals across the country today - the highest figure recorded in 2019 so far.

It's the second highest number since the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation's (INMO) records began.

The worst-affected facility today is University Hospital Limerick, with 63 patients waiting for beds.

That is followed by 60 at University Hospital Cork, and 47 at Letterkenny University Hospital.
