Ireland's Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan is stepping away from his role.
During an emotional statement on Thursday, he revealed his wife is receiving palliative care.
He also asked for respect for his family’s privacy at this time.
McDonald: No one should step down over Bobby Storey funeral
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said she does not believe she has anything to apologise for about the attendance at the funeral of IRA man Bobby Storey.
The DUP, SDLP and The Green Party have called for Sinn Féin's Northern Leader Michelle O'Neill to step aside over her attendance.
There were hundreds of people at the Belfast funeral, including the leadership of Sinn Féin.

A mother whose baby girl needs ground-breaking treatment for a rare genetic condition has said a huge donation from another family was “just incredible.”
10-month-old Olivia Mulhern was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, her mother Karen said the condition affects all of her muscles – from those she needs to breathe and swallow to those needed to life her head of sit up.

The newly-appointed leader of the Seanad Regina Doherty says women are judged differently in politics, and it is women's fault.
The former social protection minister also told The Hard Shoulder that she does not want to be minister again.
"I'm fascinated by, and I'm probably the product of it now, I see people who are giants in politics one day - and days later the power has just seeped away from them."

There has been a backlash against British comedian John Cleese, after he suggested Irish name-spellings is the reason Ireland 'never had an empire'.
It comes after a person on Twitter pointed out the spelling of the name 'Caoimhe' - to which the 'Faulty Towers' star said: "No wonder the Irish never had an empire".
