A former clerk at Anglo Irish Bank has appeared in court charged with defrauding the bank of €200,000.

Gordon O'Brien (42) of Springfield, Dooradoyle in Co. Limerick is facing trial by jury.

The married father of two is charged on nine counts of unlawfully using a computer while employed by Anglo Irish Bank at Henry Street in Limerick in 2010 and 2011.

The charges fall under Section 9 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud) Offences Act 2001.

Mr. O'Brien was arrested by appointment at the Bridewell garda station in Dublin this morning.

Detective Garda Stephen Niland gave evidence that he made no reply when each charge was put to him following a caution.

Mr. O'Brien has been released on bail on his own bond of €1,000 to sign on at Roxboro garda station every Saturday.

He does not have to surrender his passport.

The court heard the former bank clerk now works in England but his primary residence is in Limerick.

His solicitor John Bermingham applied for legal aid and asked Judge Patricia McNamara to bear in mind his client's family responsibilities.

She reviewed details of his salary but asked to see further documentation about his finances at the next court hearing before making a decision.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed trial on indictment and the book of evidence is due to be served at his next court appearance on February 10th.

Mr. O'Brien, dressed in a black jacket, checked shirt, and blue jeans, sat with his arms folded through most of the hearing.
