The glitch in Apple’s latest software system can create data over usage for users.
This defect was detected by a podcasting giant after they noticed a surge in download streaming statistics.
Public Radio Exchange Labs (PRX) discovered the flaw in the iOS 6.0.0 playback framework that is affecting media streaming and podcasts over Wi-Fi and mobile phone networks worldwide.
PRX say Apple’s iOS 6.0.1 and 6.1 beta versions which are available for update on all Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad do not have this issue.
This bug has affected Newstalk and its users directly throughout our app and media player.
Newstalk urges its Apple device users to update their software from iOS 6.0.0 to iOS 6.0.1 and 6.1 beta if you have not already done so.
PRX believe the spike in bandwidth figures is caused by Apple’s new podcast app and last week they said:
"The player appears to get into a state where it makes multiple requests per second and closes them rapidly.
“Because the ranges of these requests seem to overlap and the requests themselves each carry some overhead, this causes a single download of an MP3 to use significantly more bandwidth than in iOS 5.
“In one case, the playback of a single 30MB episode caused the transfer of over 100MB of data."
