A debate has been sparked over whether women posting explicit videos and pictures on a  subscriber-only website is exploitative or empowering.

Users pay a monthly fee to get access to explicit images and videos on the OnlyFans website.

It currently has over 60 million subscribers.

It has undergone a dramatic rise in popularity in recent years - and some Irish women are taking full advantage.

Newstalk reporter Josh Crosbie sat down with young Irish women to find out more about the everyday life of an OnlyFans star.

Jasmine Heaney (23) said she has been earning between €15,000 and €20,000 a month throughout the pandemic.

"It was a girl in England who told me about it,” she said. "She asked me, 'why don’t you get involved? You are already posting lingerie pictures; you are already confident on that side of things – why don’t you make money off it?'

"The money started coming in and I was able to actually quit my job within four months."

Alexandra Ryan, founder of Goss.ie, told Ciara Kelly on Newstalk Breakfast: "A huge amount of celebrities, influencers, younger people are also joining it - but they're not really doing the same thing.

"It's not all overly-sexually explicit videos and pictures - people are trying to use it now as an actual platform just to make money by sharing exclusive content.

"Cardi B is on there now, Kerry Katona, Bella Thorne - a former Disney actress who's quite known".

"There is two sides to it: whether it's exploitative or whether it's empowering, that's kind of the question at the moment.

"I'm very much on the post-feminism train, I think women have been sexualised and objectified for years by other people.

"I think a lot of women use it as a way to control their image.

"A lot of people are saying that they're going on it because they get to pick the photos.

"They might have been in FHM before or 'page three' girls, but now they can share the photos that they want.

"Obviously the issue is some of the content is very explicit and some women are performing sexual acts - but there is another side to it where it is just women in lingerie or maybe showing their boobs in topless photos.

"And they are feeling empowered and they're making serious money from it".

"But what I would say is it is taking a turn: even the founders of OnlyFans are trying to push YouTubers, celebrities, musicians to join it to become this kind of platform where it would just be for your fans".

Asked by Ciara if she thought women were feeding into a sexualised narrative by posting those types of images, Ali said: "I actually think at the moment a lot of women are really doing this in a way to take control cause they're sick of having to be on things like pornos and being in the industry which is more dangerous.

"I do think there is a lot of women that are doing this to be safe and to make money in their own way.

"But in saying that, even listening to that clip there from The Hard Shoulder, you can hear that there's definitely some maybe fragile people that are joining the app because they need the money - and that's where the line gets blurred".
