Speeding and drink-driving are among the offences Gardaí are looking out for in their roads operation this weekend.

Every Garda on duty this Easter will carry out road policing duties and the Road Safety Authority said these operations are important to remind motorists of the messages around bad driving behaviours.

The RSA’s Sarah O'Connor said drink driving is not acceptable.

“We had seen a diminishment in terms of people’s rejection of the acceptability of drink driving over the course of the last number of years,” she said.

“That has improved a little bit in the course of the last six months [according to] our Behaviour and Attitudes Survey.

“So, we’re very reassured by that.”

Ms O'Connor added that alcohol continues to be a “major feature” in many road crashes.

“So, we’re really asking people [to] leave the alcohol and social activities in totally different spheres this weekend and that’ll keep everybody safer,” she said.

So far this year, 48 people have died on Irish roads - 11 fewer than at this point in 2024.
