PayPal has been asked to look at every option except redundancy amid plans to cut over 200 jobs.
Remote workers in Dundalk and Blanchardstown will be hit, after a spate of redundancies at the company in recent years.
Labour Louth TD Ged Nash is describing it as "a tremendous blow to the workers and families."
Deputy Nash has called on the tech firm's bosses to consider its options.
“This latest development is extremely worrying,” he said.
“Yesterday, I spoke at length to PayPal executives about this; they made contact with me to explain the context in which this proposition was being made.
“I reminded them that it is important under Irish law that they engage in the statutory redundancy consultation process when they’re contemplating a process like this.”
Deputy Nash said redundancy should be the company’s last resort.
“I have requested that they seriously consider, for example, the potential to redeploy some staff who may be impacted by this possible redundancy process,” he said.
“Also, that they would look very seriously at opportunities to, for example, cut costs in other aspects of the business rather simply pressing the nuclear button of redundancies.”
In the last couple of years, a number of tech firms based in Ireland have made staff redundant - including Meta and Twitter.
