At least one French commando is dead and the fate of a hostage is uncertain, after a failed rescue attempt in Somalia.

The special forces tried to free Denis Allex a French agent captured more than three years ago.

The French defence ministry say they believe the hostage is dead - but the Al Shabab militia, who held him, is reported to have said he is alive.
