One family in Wicklow is considering renting storage units and living out of a car, as an eviction is pending.

Teresa, who is a mother-of-two, said they received a notice last April after living in the same property for 11 years.

She told Lunchtime Live they have been looking constantly since that time, and have found nothing they can afford.

"We've been looking since then and haven't found anywhere," she said.

"It's hanging over your head the whole time.

"It's getting very worrying for us all now, obviously, as the time approaches because we'll have to be out now the beginning of June".

'You've no stability'

Teresa said the reason they got such a long notice period is because of the amount of time they have been there.

"We fell in-between the eviction ban, it didn't come into play for us," she said.

"You've no stability when you're renting at all, as I've come to realise.

"Up to now you would have had a pick and choose of where to live, really... and now you're looking at anything".

'No emergency accommodation'

Teresa said their options are very limited.

"There's no emergency accommodation, I've been told, this side of the county," she said.

"We're waiting to hear from someone from the homeless department of Wicklow County Council.

"Unfortunately the lady that works there has retired, so they're down to - I think - a volunteer.

"We have family, but they're not in the county.

"So it could mean sleeping on couches, but that's disrupting the children's schooling.

"[That's] my main thing I don't want to do - my lad is going in and will be doing Junior Cert next year".

'Nobody should go through that'

She said they are living out of boxes "because if something comes up, obviously you want to be ready to go."

"It's hard - nobody really needs to, and they shouldn't have to, go through that in this day and age.

"Everybody should have the stability of a roof over their head, and knowing that they have that roof.

"At this stage we're looking at storage units; that we put our stuff into storage.

"I don't know - are you talking the back of a car? Are you talking sofas somewhere?

"I genuinely don't know".

 'Nothing within a budget'

Teresa said most places are gone before they're even advertised.

"We've built a home here, we're in the community and this is where we want to be," she said.

"We had looked further afield and there's still nothing - there's nothing that's within a budget.

"We're ringing [estate] agents, and basically things are gone before they're even going up on the website.

"We were told by a lot of people, really, it's going to be word of mouth that you get a house.

"They're gone before they ever get on to any website - it's soul destroying".

Teresa said they tried to keep it away from their children as long as they could.

"When it came in April, we genuinely thought we would have somewhere, and then it would be a case of saying, 'We're moving"', she said.

"The little fella is looking at it as a bit of an adventure, the older lad is a bit of a worrier anyway.

"He is kind of wondering, and he's not saying very much and you're trying to kind of get it out to him... all he knows is we're doing our best," she added.
