The family of a 19-year-old computer engineering student who died from a blood clot to his lung at Naas General Hospital is to receive €90,000 in a settlement with the Health Service Executive (HSE).

The High Court heard Ayo Akanji attended the emergency department on the night of the 2nd February 2010 with palpitations and shortness of breath. He died in A&E the following morning.

His mother Victoria Akanji of Liffey Way, Castelfen, Sallins in Co. Kildare sued the HSE for damages claiming that her son was misdiagnosed at the hospital.

She was visibly upset throughout the court hearing today in which details of his care in Naas Hospital were put before Ms. Justice Mary Irvine for her to approve the settlement.

There was no admission of liability by the HSE.

19-year-old Ayo Akanji was in year 2 of a 3 year course in Crumlin College leaves behind 4 siblings - three in Ireland and one in Nigeria.

Family solicitor Ann Nowlan says the family are still struggling to come to terms with his death.

She said at the time of the tragedy Victoria Akanji requested a meeting with hospital management to discuss the circumstances of the death but no such meeting was forthcoming.

'No support no counselling was ever offered to Victoria in the wake of Ayo’s death', she said. She spoke outside court.
