A Galway farmer who was convicted of manslaughter has been jailed for six years.

Michael Scott of Gortanumera, Portumna, ran over his aunt in a JCB teleporter in April 2018.

The jury acquitted him of murder but found him guilty of manslaughter by reason of gross negligence.

Today, the judge described Chrissie Treacy as a “proud and private” woman, who was much loved by her community.

She was 76-years-old and in poor health when her nephew crushed her to death; he claimed it was an accident but the Gardaí believed he meant to do it due to a falling out over farmland they shared at Derryhiney, County Galway.

Scott’s trial heard the JCB teleporter was missing a mirror on the left-hand side and that he only looked over his right shoulder before he reversed into the farmyard.

He shook his head when he was jailed for six years today.

Before she sentenced him, the judge asked if he accepted the verdict of the jury.

After a brief consultation with his barrister, the court was told he did.
