The father of an Irish girl who took her own life last year says he has no doubt that the website ask.fm played a role in her death. There are renewed calls for the ban of the question and answer website after it was blamed for the suicide of English schoolgirl Hannah Smith who was also taunted on it.

Ask.FM which is based in Latvia says it encourages users to report incidences of bullying.

The site was named in the wake of a number of suicides here last year including the death of Erin Gallagher from Donegal and Ciara Pugsley from Leitrim.

Ciara's father Jonathan told Breakfast here on Newstalk that the abuse his daughter received on the site was a factor in her death but they will never know just how much.

It all comes after 14-year-old Hannah Smith - from Leicestershire in the UK - killed herself on Friday after being bullied on ask.fm.

In a statement website ask.fm said "We have reached out to the Leicestershire Police and would be happy to cooperate with their investigation into the true circumstances of her suicide.

"Hannah Smith's death is a true tragedy. We would like to convey our deepest condolences to her family and friends."

It said it actively "encourages users and their parents to report any incidences of bullying", either by using the in-site reporting button, or via the website's contact page".

"All reports are read by our team of moderators to ensure that genuine concerns are heard and acted upon immediately - and we always remove content reported to us that violates our Terms of Service" the statement added.

Hannah's father Dave has called on British Prime Minister David Cameron to ensure social media sites are properly regulated.
