Coastal flooding is a major concern as Storm Ashley hits counties along the Western seaboard today.
An orange weather warning has been issued for Galway, Mayo, Clare and Donegal from noon until 8PM this evening.
A yellow weather alert is in place nationwide until 3AM tomorrow morning.
National Director for Fire and Emergency Planning Keith Leonard said local authorities are preparing for the worst.
“There are concerns about coastal overtopping, flooding - particularly along the West coast and the North-West,” he said.
“From Donegal down as far as Waterford but really across all coasts.
“That’s where local authorities are focusing their attention over the next 48 hours.”
Drivers in particular have been warned to avoid flooded areas and be mindful of any debris on the road.
"Slow down, leave a greater breaking distance between yourself and the vehicle in front in these wet conditions," RSA spokesperson David Martin advised.
"Particuarly on motorways or dual carriageways, there is a danger of aquaplaining.
"Also, take special care when you're driving behind trucks or special goods vehicles, they generate a lot of spray which reduces your visibility.
"If the road ahead is flooded, choose another route."
In certain parts of the country, wind speeds could reach up to 130km/ph.
