The Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, has called on the Taoiseach to intervene to avert a full blown constitutional crisis arising out of a row between the Justice Minister Alan Shatter and the Judiciary.

Last night Minister Shatter rejected claims made by the Association of Judges that the structures for communication between the Government and the Judiciary have ceased.

It follows comments made by Judge Peter Kelly who accused the Government of attacking judicial independence with pay cuts for judges, and the establishment of new courts.
