A new opinion poll shows support for Fine Gael has risen slightly since the new abortion laws were passed. The Paddy Power-Red C summer recess poll shows the party of Enda Kenny at 29% - up one point since June.

Fianna Fail support remains static at 22%, while Labour support is down one point to 11%. Sinn Fein is down two points on 15%, while support for Independents is up slightly to 23%.

Paddy Power says the recent passing of the abortion legislation "does not appear to have had any impact on support for Fine Gael, who remain the most preferred political party".

It also says that there is unlikely to be any heave in Fianna Fail against party leader Michael Martin, adding that "the party retains the same level of support as seen in July".

This latest poll puts Independents ahead of Fianna Fáil, which was not seen since June 2012, when support for Independents stood at 19% and Fianna Fáil at 18%.

The poll says that strengths for Independent are from males, those living in Dublin and also strong support coming from those aged 35 to 64. These are also the key demographics where Fianna Fail see very low support.
