A Fine Gael TD has called for a free vote on any new abortion legislation.

Dublin South-East TD Eoghan Murphy says TDs should not be forced to vote for something they do not agree with.

The government will decide tomorrow whether it is going to legislation for abortion where the life of the mother is at risk.

However the Taoiseach Enda Kenny has already said there will be no free vote on the issue.

His Europe Minister Lucinda Creighton has expressed concern over legislating for abortion where there is a threat of suicide.

And her constituency colleague Eoghan Murphy says TDs should not be subject to a party whip on this matter.

Scope is "too narrow"

Meanwhile the Junior Health Minister Kathleen Lynch has warned that the decision to be taken by the government on new abortion legislation tomorrow will not meet the expectations of the majority of people.

She told the Dail that she expects the Cabinet to introduce a combination of legislation and regulations to deal with abortion where there is a threat to the life of a mother.

But she said the Cabinet is so limited in how it can act that further cases are likely to come before the courts which require the attention of government.

"We will now either legislate or legislate with regulation" she said.

"But mark my words: there will be another incident which we will have to come back and face this issue again - because what we're about to do is way too narrow" she added.
